How NHSBT is formed

NHSBT was created in October 2005 as a result of a Government review. Before joining forces, we were the National Blood Authority (which managed the National Blood Service, Bio Products Laboratory and the International Blood Group Reference Laboratory) and UK Transplant.

NHSBT is now responsible for managing all the products and services previously provided by both organisations, including:

  • Promoting blood, tissue and organ donation to the public
  • Managing the supply of blood to hospitals in England and North Wales
  • Working with hospital colleagues to promote the safe and appropriate use of blood
  • Providing a range of tissues and other services to hospitals
  • Managing organ transplantation in the UK
  • Managing the British Bone Marrow Register
  • Provision of a wide range of diagnostic services

NHSBT operates in England and North Wales, while South Wales and Scotland are managed by the Welsh & Scottish Blood Services.
