Divisional Finance Director, Dave Metcalf helped to secure a £75 million budget, which has transformed NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT). This is his story.
I have been working with NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) since 1998. The main reason I’ve stayed so long is because of what NHSBT does and has achieved. When the Organ Donation Task Force report was published in 2008, it had targets to increase organ donation by 50%. At the time we had a £15 million budget. It was my job to cost up the recommendations of the report and to help develop a 5 year financial plan that underpinned the strategy.
We now have a £75 million budget and hit the 50% target increase in 2013. NHSBT has used the extra budget to take on the commissioning of a National Organ Retrieval Service, employ specialist nurses and place clinical leads in all UK hospitals.
"My role is seen as back office but knowing the number of lives that have changed because of what we do gives an enormous sense of achievement."
The next few years will see even more transformation, it’s an exciting and challenging time.
To date there has been a 69% increase in deceased organ donors. It’s a good feeling. NHSBT is a wonderful place to work with really nice people. As an employer it is very good at supporting and developing its staff and offers great opportunities.
